Don’t Forget

One blow to your ego,

one blow to your heart.

A stab at your creed,

a thrust through your mind

I fill your body with lacerations,

Open up your skin,

Fiddle through the nerves and veins

of your stubborn soul.

Peel your dermis, epidermis,

I draw down your defenses,

Seeping into your bloodstream

Like your fix of favorite alcohol,

Your daily dose of caffeine.

Going down,

Far, far too deep to expel —

The workings of a sweet, slow poison.

You can hate me all you want,

But you will never get me out of your system.
